Forestry Commission Celebrates International Day of Forests
By Thomas Faranando
The Forestry Commission is gearing up to celebrate the International Day of Forests on March 21, 2025, under the theme “Forests and Food.” This year’s focus highlights the crucial role forests play in ensuring food security, nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods. The provincial commemorations will take place at Highbury Lounge in Kadoma, starting at 08:00 AM, featuring exciting activities such as tree planting, exhibitions, and a quiz.
Timothy Chizuzu, founding director of the National Environment Awareness Trust (NEAT), emphasized the significance of this celebration. “Forests are the backbone of our ecosystem, providing food, shelter, and livelihoods for millions of people. It’s essential that we come together to raise awareness about the importance of forest conservation and sustainability.”
The event aims to educate participants about the vital role forests play in maintaining food security, nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods. Forests provide a rich variety of food sources, including fruits, nuts, seeds, mushrooms, honey, and wild meat, essential for the nutrition and well-being of billions of people. Additionally, over 1.6 billion people rely on forests for their livelihoods, supporting entire ecosystems and the global economy. Forests also help regulate the climate, providing clean air and water, and supporting biodiversity.
The Forestry Commission extends its gratitude to all stakeholders for their continued support and looks forward to a successful celebration of the International Day of Forests. By attending the event, participants will contribute to a greater understanding of the significance of forests in our daily lives.
