Beitbridge Man Kills Wife at Divorce Mediation After In-Laws Suggest Separation

BEITBRIDGE – Mukhosi Shadreck Mulaudzi Muthavhatsindi is in custody after allegedly stabbing his wife once through the chest at Matshiloni village on Sunday afternoon, killing her instantly, at a family-convened mediation session that ended in violence.

Muthavhatsindi and his wife had been living together in South Africa before their dispute drove them to return to Zimbabwe separately on Friday 24 April — he to his home in Malala village, she to her family’s home in Matshiloni. Two days later, both families gathered at the wife’s homestead with a Munyai, a traditional go-between, to attempt a resolution.

Beitbridge police chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube said mediation collapsed when the wife’s relatives proposed divorce, having concluded the couple could not reach an agreement. The suggestion enraged Muthavhatsindi, who stood up and charged at his wife. She ran and hid behind one of the houses on the homestead.

He caught up with her and stabbed her once on the left side of the chest. She screamed and collapsed, dying at the scene. Muthavhatsindi fled but was pursued and restrained by community members before police arrived.

The suspect is in custody pending his initial court appearance. His wife’s body was taken to hospital for a post-mortem examination, Chief Supt Ncube said.

The killing follows a pattern documented across Southern Africa in which women face the highest risk of lethal violence not during sustained abuse, but at the precise moment of separation, when a partner concludes the relationship is ending.
