No End in Sight for Kadoma Water Woes
By Lloyd Mwale in Kadoma
The residents of Kadoma are facing an ongoing water supply crisis that seems to have no end in sight. It’s been almost a month since the issue came to light, yet there has been no update on when the situation will be resolved.
This has left the residents of this city in a state of uncertainty and frustration, as the local authority has remained mum on the matter, despite fully knowing water is an essential resource that is vital for daily needs, from cooking and drinking to sanitation and hygiene.
However, for the people of Kadoma, this basic necessity has become a luxury that they can only dream of as the City of Kadoma has failed to provide to provide.
The water supply crisis has severely affected the lives of the residents, and it’s high time for the authorities to take action and address the issue. The lack of water supply has caused a ripple effect on the daily lives of the people in Kadoma.
The residents are facing difficulties in carrying out their daily tasks, such as cooking, bathing, and even flushing their toilets. This has not only caused inconvenience but also raised concerns about hygiene and health.
The scarcity of water has also affected businesses, as many are unable to operate without access to water. What’s even more concerning is the lack of communication from the city’s authorities. The residents are left in the dark as there has been no official statement or update on the situation.
Despite having John Mack Claw Dam as the main source of water which supplies City of Kadoma, two water treatment plants at Pasi Dam and Kadoma Water Works, the taps have remained dry.
In interviews, some chain supermarkets, food outlets and hair salons operators said expecting tap water to run was like expecting water from a rock.
“We’ve been operating in Kadoma for some time now and at our institution we’ve never had running water from the local authority and we ended up drilling a borehole, but above all we honour our obligations to City of Kadoma monthly,” said one supermarket store manager.
Another supermarket chain manager echoed the same sentiments of no end in sight of Kadoma water woes.
“Its now almost a month without water trickling on our taps and we’ve never heard any updates from the city’s authorities on the water situation, but since we had a backup we are now relying on borehole water for our business. We pay religiously to council but we’re are not accessing that service from our council,” said another supermarket chain store manager.
Hair salons operators said they were now relying on borehole water which is not conducive to use for their business since they use chemicals which end up having effects on their clients.
“Our business requires treated water since we use chemicals for treating hair, but we have had no water on our taps for almost a month and we don’t foresee City of Kadoma going to supply us with water. But we have to work so we are now using borehole water which we keep in plastic buckets within our working place and that water quickly changes colour with each passing day but we don’t have any option but to continue with that because City of Kadoma has failed us,”said some hair salon operators who operate in the city’s central business district.
The lack of transparency from the authorities is unacceptable, and the citizens of Kadoma deserve to know what is being done to resolve the water crisis. The water supply crisis in Kadoma is not a new issue. It has been an ongoing problem for years, yet there seems to be no concrete solution in sight.
Despite the occasional temporary fixes, the problem persists, leaving the residents in a continuous state of uncertainty. This raises questions about the efficiency of the city’s management and their ability to address and handle such a crucial issue.
The lack of access to clean water is not just a problem for Kadoma, but for many other cities and towns in Zimbabwe. It’s high time for the government to prioritize this matter and ensure that its citizens have access to this basic necessity.
Proper management and infrastructure development are necessary to prevent such crisis from occurring in the future. The water supply crisis in Kadoma is a pressing issue that needs immediate attention. The residents have been facing this problem for far too long, and it’s time for the authorities to take responsibility and provide a long-term solution.
It’s crucial for the city’s management to communicate effectively with its citizens and keep them updated on the progress of resolving the crisis. It’s high time for the people of Kadoma to have access to a reliable and sustainable water supply.
