Zimbabwe Begins ID, Repatriation Of 17 Malawians Killed In DRD Bus Accident In Nyamapanda

The death toll from Tuesday’s bus crash on the Harare–Nyamapanda highway has risen to 17, with 45 passengers injured, police confirmed on Wednesday.

The Malawi-bound DRD bus crashed at around 1:30 pm on 5 May 2026 at the 175 km peg, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

The 45 injured victims were taken to Kotwa District Hospital and Mutoko District Hospital, where they are receiving treatment. The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the two hospitals’ mortuaries pending identification and post-mortem examinations.

ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the Government of Zimbabwe is working with the Malawian Embassy and other authorities to identify the victims and arrange repatriation.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Malawi following this tragic accident,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

The ZRP initially posted details of the crash on X before releasing Wednesday’s formal update.

The cause of the accident has not yet been disclosed. Investigations are ongoing.
