Winky D’s ‘Chivanhu’ sparks national conversation on culture, identity and society

Zimbabwean music icon Winky D is receiving widespread acclaim after the release of his latest track, Chivanhu, a song that has ignited conversations about culture, identity, morality and the direction of modern Zimbabwean society.

The song has drawn praise from journalists, politicians, fellow artists and social media users, many of whom say it goes beyond entertainment and challenges listeners to reflect on their values and collective identity.

Prominent journalist Hopewell Chin’ono commended the musician for tackling issues of cultural identity and self-awareness, describing the song as an important contribution to national discourse.

In a post on X, Chin’ono said the track raises critical questions about Africans disconnecting from their history and traditions in favour of foreign cultural and religious influences introduced during colonialism.

He argued that societies prosper when they understand and embrace their own identity, values and heritage, adding that Winky D had matured into an artist who shapes conversations rather than merely entertaining audiences.

“Consummate artists do not chase narratives, they shape them. They do not merely reflect society, they challenge it, provoke thought, and help direct the national conversation towards issues that matter,” Chin’ono wrote.

“That is what separates entertainers from cultural icons. The greatest artists leave a lasting imprint on the conscience of a nation.

“Well done to Winky D and his team for producing work that stimulates thought and encourages introspection. More life to Gaffa Nation.”

Opposition legislator Blessing Makumire also weighed in on the song, interpreting it as a moral reflection on governance, corruption and social responsibility.

Makumire said the message of “Chivanhu” challenges both leaders and society to examine whether current realities align with traditional Zimbabwean values rooted in Ubuntu.

He questioned whether it could still be considered “chivanhu” when public hospitals lack medicines, communities struggle with poor infrastructure and some public officials accumulate wealth while ordinary citizens suffer.

“I see the song as asking: If we say we respect our culture and values, why are people suffering while a few become wealthy?

“Traditional Zimbabwean values (Ubuntu) often emphasize responsibility to the community, caring for the vulnerable, honesty, and respect for human life.

“When hospitals lack medicines, patients struggle to get treatment, and public money disappears through corruption, the song’s theme of ‘chivanhu’ becomes a challenge to those in power as well as society itself,” Makumire noted.

“Is it chivanhu when public officials enrich themselves while public hospitals struggle?

“Is it chivanhu when citizens must fundraise for basic medical treatment?

“Is it chivanhu when communities lack clean water, medicines, or functioning infrastructure despite significant public expenditure?”

Fellow musician Mudiwa Hood praised Winky D for addressing issues of culture and tradition, saying Zimbabweans needed to reclaim their values and preserve their identity.

“Well done Winky D. this is a very good song, as a leader you addressed an important issue Tsika Dzedu ne Chivanhu takazvisiya kupiko…

“The culture we are being sold has Chichie mani amongst other things we do not like, No to Chichie man ne ngito, tarambaaa, we should embrace our culture and observe it… inegwara rakanaka.”

Social media commentators also hailed the award-winning artist for using music to reflect the country’s struggles and aspirations.

One X user described Winky D as “more than an artist” and called him “a cultural custodian” capable of articulating society’s values, struggles and aspirations with emotional intelligence and social awareness.

The release of “Chivanhu” has generated significant discussion online, with many listeners interpreting the song as both a celebration of African identity and a critique of social and political realities in Zimbabwe.

Widely regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s most influential musicians, Winky D has built a reputation for producing socially conscious music that often resonates strongly with the country’s youth and broader public. *_-Nehanda Radio_*
