Kariba MP loses sister and 15 relatives in boat accident

Opposition MP for Kariba, Shine Gwangwaba has told Masvingo Mirror that he has lost his blood sister, several of her nephews and at least 15 relatives in the boat that capsized in Kariba today.

Contrary to earlier estimates, the boat named Mbuya Nehanda could have been carrying much more than 100 people when it capsized, said Gwangwaba.

He told Masvingo Mirror that Kariba is in state of mourning as many families lost several relatives.

He said Mola Village under Chief Mola, which is his village lost several people and there more other families that lost a number of people each.

“I have loss of words. We have lost relatives and funerals are all over. In my family, I lost a sister and at least 15 close relatives, neighbours lost relatives and the village lost several people. As I speak we are already gathered here in Kariba rural for the funeral of my sister and other relatives,” said Gwangaba.

The boat which was travelling from Kariba Urban to Chilala Fishing Camp across the Lake capsized this afternoon as it faced big waves.
