Faith and Leadership at Gwanzura: Mnangagwa and Mafume Join Thousands for Johane Masowe Conference

Harare – A significant moment of faith and national leadership unfolded today at Gwanzura Stadium as President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa addressed the Johane Masowe weChishanu annual conference.
Thousands of congregants gathered in unity and prayer, dressed in white, to hear the President’s message in what marked a powerful intersection of faith, national leadership, and community solidarity.
President Mnangagwa thanked the church for its prayers for the nation and called for peace, unity and development. The President’s attendance underscores government’s continued engagement with apostolic churches, which command a significant following across Zimbabwe.
Also present at the gathering was Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume. The Mayor was seen seated among dignitaries and church leaders, wearing the traditional white garment of the congregation.
Mafume’s appearance has drawn mixed reactions online. One commentator, Patson Kanengoni, posted: “@JMafume “this guy is @ZANUPF_Official to the core. We have this as leaders in opposition.” The post suggested Mafume was “protecting his loot” amid talk of 2030.
The reaction reflects the tight spot opposition officials find themselves in. To some CCC supporters, seeing Mafume at a state-attended event with ZANU PF leaders raises questions about loyalty at a time when the opposition has been fractured by recalls. Critics label it political survival.
To other Harare residents, however, the Mayor’s presence is simply part of his mandate. As the city’s chief executive, he is expected to attend national, civic and religious events regardless of party affiliation. Proponents argue that collaboration with central government is essential to deliver water, roads, and housing for Harare.
The Johane Masowe weChishanu conference has historically hosted senior ZANU PF leaders, but in recent years opposition councillors and mayors have also been invited as part of community outreach.
President Mnangagwa and Mayor Mafume being together at Gwanzura highlights how governance and party politics often meet at public and religious events in Zimbabwe. For the President, it is direct engagement with a key faith community. For the Mayor, it is both a civic duty and a political balancing act.
