“Zvigananda” gift 588 cattle to Mnangagwa
President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s 84th birthday celebrations in Mvurwi have been marked by a reported donation of 588 cattle from a group of wealthy businesspeople and members of the First Family.
The reported donations have drawn attention because several of the individuals involved are part of the group popularly referred to in Zimbabwean political discourse as “Zvigananda” — a term used, particularly by Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, to describe wealthy and politically connected elites. The term has become associated with allegations of patronage, preferential access to state-linked opportunities and the accumulation of wealth by individuals close to political power.
Among those reported to have each donated 84 cattle are Wicknell Chivayo, Kudakwashe Tagwirei, Mabvuku-Tafara MP Scott Sakupwanya, Paul Tungwarara, Delish Nguwaya and President Mnangagwa’s twin sons, Collins and Sean Mnangagwa.
The reported donations were announced as Mnangagwa celebrated his 84th birthday in Mvurwi, Mashonaland Central Province, on Tuesday, September 15.
The birthday coincided with the newly established Munhumutapa Day, which the government has declared an annual public holiday through Statutory Instrument 148 of 2026. The holiday falls on September 15, the date officially recognised as Mnangagwa’s birthday, and has been presented by government as a commemoration of Zimbabwe’s pre-colonial Mutapa heritage.
The celebrations have nevertheless attracted scrutiny because the new public holiday directly coincides with the President’s birthday and was declared during his tenure.
Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Tino Machakaire announced the reported cattle donations during the birthday celebrations.
The reported gesture comes against a broader backdrop of increasingly visible relationships between politically connected businesspeople and the First Family. Chivayo, for instance, has publicly made substantial donations linked to government programmes and national events, while OCCRP has documented Tagwirei’s extensive business relationships with the Zimbabwean state and his close links to President Mnangagwa’s political and economic network.
The latest cattle donations have therefore reignited debate over the relationship between Zimbabwe’s political leadership, wealthy business interests and the First Family — and whether such high-value gifts represent philanthropy, political loyalty or patronage. *_-ZimEye_*
