Botswana detains Zimbabwean man found with human body parts

FRANCISTOWN, Botswana – A 28-year-old Zimbabwean national, Nyasha Mudzongeri (right), has been remanded in custody after appearing before Francistown magistrate Ditebogo Nthuli on charges linked to the suspected possession of human remains.
Mudzongeri faces two counts — entering Botswana through an ungazetted point of entry and unlawful possession of human flesh or remains.
He was arrested by Botswana police on September 13 near Shashe-Mooke Village following information received by the police. He allegedly told police he was a spiritual healer.
The Botswana Police Service said exhibits recovered during the investigation had been submitted to its Forensic Science Services Laboratory for forensic and scientific examination.
The tests, police said, would help establish the origin of the exhibits and determine whether they had any further evidential value.
Mudzongeri was remanded in prison and is expected to return to court on September 18.
Police have urged members of the public to refrain from sharing or creating unverified material about the case, saying investigations are still under way.
“The public is also encouraged to rely on official updates issued by the BPS and other competent authorities,” assistant commissioner of police Near Bagali, the BPS public relations officer, said in a September 15 statement.
“Responsible use of social media is essential in safeguarding the integrity of investigations and ensuring that justice is not undermined by misinformation.”
The case remains under investigation.
