CAPS United crash out of Munhumutapa Cup after Hunters comeback
HARARE — CAPS United were knocked out of the inaugural ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup after FC Hunters produced a spirited comeback to secure a place in the next round.
The Green Machine appeared to be firmly in control after Ishmael Wadi scored twice in the first half, putting CAPS United in a commanding position.
However, Hunters refused to surrender and mounted a determined fightback after the break, turning the contest on its head and eliminating the Premier Soccer League side.
The defeat represents a major setback for CAPS United, who had entered the competition with hopes of ending a decade-long wait for major silverware.
The Harare giants had previously advanced to the Round of 16 after thrashing Scottland U19 6-0 in the previous round.
Coach Takesure Chiragwi had identified the Munhumutapa Cup as one of the club’s major opportunities to salvage the season. CAPS United’s last major trophy came in 2016 when they won the Premier Soccer League title under Lloyd Chitembwe.
The Munhumutapa Challenge Cup carries added significance because its inaugural winners will receive US$1 million in prize money and earn Zimbabwe’s place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
CAPS United’s elimination leaves Hunters as one of the lower-profile sides continuing their challenge for the lucrative trophy, underlining the unpredictable nature of knockout football in Zimbabwe.
For CAPS United, attention will now shift back to their league campaign and the remaining domestic competitions as they attempt to finish the season strongly.
