Farai Madhanhanga’s stoppage-time header lifted Ngezi Platinum Stars to third position on the Premier Soccer League log standings after they defeated Highlanders 1-0 in a tightly contested midweek game at Baobab Stadium.

With the match seemingly destined for a goalless draw, Madhanhanga rose above a crowded Highlanders defence to power home a glancing header from a Leslie Kashitigu cross in the 92nd minute, sending the sizeable home crowd into wild celebrations.

Both sides displayed beauriful passing football from the outset, with Ngezi seeking to make the most of their home advantage while Highlanders looked to threaten through quick counter-attacks.

Despite several promising opportunities, neither side managed to break the deadlock in the opening half.

The goalkeepers were largely untested as both defences remained organised and kept the opposing forwards at bay, forcing the teams into the interval level at 0-0

The intensity increased after the break as both teams pushed forward in search of the decisive goal.

Ngezi gradually took control of possession and began probing the Highlanders defence with greater purpose.

Their persistence eventually paid off when Madhanhanga rose highest to meet Kashitigu’s delivery that produced the decisive touch deep into added time.

Although delighted with the victory, Ngezi coach Kumbirai Mutiwekuziva acknowledged that his side had been made to work hard for the three points.

“Highlanders are no pushovers, but we had the intention to win. We tirelessly probed their defence and, at the end of the day, we are happy with the result,” said Mutiwekuziva.

Highlanders who were without their coach Benjani Mwaruwari as he was attending the funeral of businessman Wicknell Chivhayo, could have shot ahead in the 88minute but lady luck was not on their side.

Mongameli Tshuma recieved a pass from Andrew Mbeba cloaked two defenders with Darlington Musariranwa on the other side, and when he thought he had found the breakthrough, outstanding Kashitigu ghosted to clear from the line.

Highlanders assistant coach Mkhokheli Dube attributed the defeat to his side’s failure to convert their chances but praised his players for their commitment.

“The boys played their hearts out. They were very committed, but in football, if you create chances and fail to score, you will eventually get punished, and that is what happened,” said Dube.
