Wicknell Chivayo’s death leaves car dealers facing millions in losses

Zimbabwean car dealers are facing uncertainty over luxury vehicle orders linked to the late businessman Wicknell Chivayo, with outstanding payments and undelivered giveaways reportedly caught up in the administration of his estate.

Among the vehicles reportedly affected are a 2026 Lexus GX 550 valued at US$220,000 and a 2026 Range Rover Sport Autobiography, announced during Chivayo’s final days.

Dealers who sourced, imported or reserved vehicles for his high-profile giveaways now face questions over who will settle outstanding bills and authorise the release of the cars.

*Millions at stake*

The uncertainty could leave dealerships with expensive stock sitting idle while storage, insurance and financing costs continue to mount.

Recipients promised the vehicles are also left waiting, with no guarantee that the deals will be completed.

Chivayo reportedly spent more than US$9.3 million on luxury vehicles and gifts in a 12-month period, while a separate citizen-led review estimated his publicly documented giving at approximately US$46.6 million.

However, the actual losses facing dealers remain unclear, with no comprehensive public audit of the affected transactions available.

*Who will pay?*

The appointment of an authorised executor is expected to be crucial in determining how outstanding orders and financial obligations are handled.

Until the estate’s administration progresses, dealers face uncertainty over whether the transactions will be honoured, renegotiated or abandoned.

Chivayo’s death has left more than a legacy of lavish giveaways — it has also raised questions over unpaid bills, stranded luxury vehicles and who will ultimately foot the bill. *_-Various_*
