Mnangagwa to be sole candidate at ZANU PF National People’s Congress in 2029

ZANU PF has resolved that President Emmerson Mnangagwa should be the sole presidential candidate at its next congress and that the congress itself should be deferred to 2029.

At its 23rd National People’s Conference, which ended on Saturday in Chinhoyi, ZANU PF resolved that Mnangagwa must be the sole party presidential candidate at the 8th ZANU PF National People’s Congress.

The conference also resolved to align the Party Constitution with the National Constitution in respect of the term of office for party leadership, from the Cell to the Central Committee, and to defer the 8th National People’s Congress to 2029.

The deferment would extend the current leadership’s tenure and push back the party’s elective congress, which would ordinarily elect its presidential candidate for the next national election.

The conference directed the Government to expeditiously make all consequential legislative amendments arising from National Constitution Amendment No. 3. The amendment provides for an extension of presidential and parliamentary terms.

It also called for disciplinary measures against ZANU PF Members of Parliament who absconded from Parliament and failed to vote in the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 vote. The party says those who did not participate in the vote should face internal disciplinary action.

The conference also resolved to develop a framework to implement the principle of Party Supremacy over Government. The framework will outline the Order of Precedence and oversight of Party Departments over line Ministries, formalising the party’s authority over government structures.

The conference directed that the ZANU PF Party Constitution be translated into the sixteen official languages of Zimbabwe and that the Government ensure that all candidates for employment in public institutions are recommended by the Party.
