One dead as guard shoots at marauding illegal gold panners

ONE illegal gold panner was shot dead after a marauding gang pounced on a mine in Guruve, Mashonaland Central province.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the deadly scuffle that resulted in the death of 33-year-old Titus Masango on Thursday.

“Police in Guruve are investigating a case of murder which occurred on October 24, 2024 at a gold mine.

“A security guard, Simon Chiunye (36) shot dead Masango Titus (33) with a Huglo shotgun on the head.

“The victim was part of illegal gold panners who had invaded the mine,” said national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

In the ensuing attack, Chiunye was assaulted by the invaders, sustained injuries and is currently admitted at a hospital in Harare.
