Triple tragedy for 17 Malawians arrested after fatal bus crash in Karoi
KAROI, Zimbabwe – Seventeen Malawian nationals have been arraigned at the Karoi Magistrates’ Court for illegal entry into Zimbabwe following a fatal bus crash on March 30 along the Harare–Chirundu highway.
The group was discovered by police at the scene of the accident involving a Malawian-registered Achisi Bus, which veered off the road and crashed near the 165-kilometer peg. While the number of fatalities has not been officially confirmed, authorities described the crash as “fatal.”
During rescue and response operations, police officers found that 17 passengers aboard the bus were traveling without valid travel documents, the National Prosecuting Authority said in a statement. The bus driver fled the scene and remains at large, prompting police to open a parallel investigation into possible human trafficking.
The suspects, all of Malawian origin, were remanded in custody until April 16, as the court awaits the services of a Chewa language interpreter.
Authorities say the incident points to concerns around illegal migration and suspected trafficking activities along Zimbabwe’s northern corridor, a route often used by migrants transiting from Malawi and other countries en route to South Africa.
“The case highlights concerns over illegal migration and
possible trafficking of persons along Zimbabwe’s northern
transit routes,” the NPA said in a statement.
