12 perish in Harare-Bulawayo highway crash near Kwekwe
Kwekwe, Zimbabwe – Twelve people died in a horrific road traffic accident near Sebakwe River along the Harare-Bulawayo Road early Tuesday morning, police confirmed.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police said the crash occurred at the 200-kilometre peg near Kwekwe when a fuel tanker with two trailers collided with a two-tonne truck and a Nissan AD Van carrying 12 passengers.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the tanker, which was travelling from Harare towards Kwekwe, first sideswiped the two-tonne truck before colliding head-on with the AD Van coming from the opposite direction.
“The tanker dragged the AD Van for several metres before overturning and landing on top of it, trapping all occupants,” Nyathi said.
All 12 people in the AD Van died at the scene. Their bodies were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital for post-mortem.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
