LUSAKA โ€“ A tragic safari accident has claimed the lives of two elderly female touristsโ€”Easton Taylor, 68, from the UK and Alison Taylor, 67, from New Zealandโ€”after they were trampled to death by a charging elephant in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park.

According to police, the women were part of a guided walking safari when a female elephant with a calf charged from behind. Attempts by guides to scare off the elephant by firing shots were unsuccessful, and the women died on the spot.

โ€œThey were moving to other camps when the elephant charged from behind. We are really sorry that we have lost our visitors,โ€ said local police chief Robertson Mweemba.

The victims had been staying at Big Lagoon Camp for four days before the fatal incident, which occurred approximately 600 km from Lusaka.

Authorities reiterated warnings about wildlife encounters, especially with nursing elephants, which are extremely protective and unpredictable.

The British Foreign Office has confirmed support for the victimโ€™s family and is liaising with local officials.

This incident follows similar fatal attacks last year involving American tourists, raising fresh concerns about safety protocols during wildlife tours in Zambia.
