WE-CARE annual learning event is a four day program which started on Monday ending Thursday. It has been active since its launch in 2013 with the aim of addressing unpaid care and domestic work to promote gender equality and economic development.
Oxfam’s WE-Care initiative aims to address the heavy and unequal responsibilities of care and housework, promoting gender equality and economic development.
The initiative aims to recognize, reduce, and redistribute unpaid care and domestic work (UCDW) to create lasting change for women and girls. “Value care work and acknowledge its importance in sustaining communities and economies. Our aim is also to decrease difficult or inefficient tasks, such as collecting water or doing laundry, through improved infrastructure and services,” explained Jeffrey Maganya Oxfam In Africa Head Of Programs
Other aims are to redistribute Care Work and share care responsibilities more equitably between women and men, and redistribute costs from poor families to states and employers

Oxfam WE-Care’s Miss Charity Namao who is based in Kenya said the program has been implemented in several countries, including Zimbabwe, Uganda, Colombia, Ethiopia, Malawi, and the Philippines, with a focus on Women’s Economic Empowerment. “We strengthen women’s economic leadership and livelihoods and promote policy changes and legislation that support care work and gender equality,” she said.
WE-Care has made a difference in many lives, such as Ulita Mutambo’s story in Zimbabwe, where her husband began helping with household chores after joining the program, allowing her to spend more time with her children and help with their homework .
Overally, Oxfam’s WE-Care initiative seeks to create a more just and inclusive society where women and girls have more choices and opportunities in life.
