‘Make Peace, Not Noise’–Temba Mliswa Urges Govt to Reconcile with Winky D
Outspoken former legislator Temba Mliswa has urged the government and dancehall star Winky D to “smoke a peace pipe,” saying continued hostility towards the artist has only elevated his influence and made him a powerful voice among the youth.
Winky D, one of Zimbabwe’s most socially conscious musicians, has long been at odds with authorities over his politically charged lyrics that speak against corruption, inequality, and social decay.
Tensions reached boiling point in 2023 when state media banned his music following the release of the critically acclaimed album “Eureka Eureka.” The project’s bold themes—spotlighting injustice and economic hardship—earned him international praise but also government wrath.
Human Rights Watch later criticised the move as an attack on artistic freedom and free expression.
According to a report by NewZimbabwe, the clampdown inadvertently boosted Winky D’s popularity, turning him into a symbol of resistance and truth-telling through music.
Mliswa said it was time the government shifted its stance and collaborated with the artist, especially on campaigns that resonate with the youth.
“I have always admired Winky D and the manner he goes about his business. He is one of the cleanest artists whom the government should engage to advance the message against drug abuse,” Mliswa said.
“The ruling party must work with him, and one can imagine the impact of engaging him alongside Jah Prayzah in this campaign.”
Known for his fearless commentary, Winky D has remained a steadfast voice for the marginalized.
Mliswa applauded him for staying true to his craft despite repeated attempts to silence him.
“It’s now clear that in trying to fight him, they have only managed to make him bigger. My only issue is that he should be more accessible. Otherwise, he has weathered attacks and remained focused,” he added.
