Simon Mazorodze road flyover a crime hotspot

POLICE have arrested a man they suspect is a member of a gang of armed robbers who have been terrorising people at the Simon Mazorodze Road Flyover area in Harare on Sunday.

Tatenda Nyanhema, 36, was arrested after his gang stole a phone and US$5 from a man they attacked on Friday evening.

Five of his accomplices managed to escape.

The Simon Mazorodze Road Flyover area has become a hotspot for crime, with many people being mugged while valuables have been snatched from motorists.

Witnesses say the robbers often flee into the nearby Pioneer Cemetery in Mbare after committing their crimes.

The H-Metro hotline has received a number of calls from victims pleading for increased police presence in the area.

Aaron Ruzani, 25, and his brother Johannes Nyawata, from Shonhai Village under Chief Svosve, lost US$5 and a cellphone during a brazen daylight robbery.

On Friday evening, Aaron and Johannes were at a bus stop at the Simon Mazorodze Road Flyover.

Six men were stalking them and one of the robbers grabbed Aaron by the neck while another brandished an iron bar, threatening his life.

Meanwhile, two other men searched his bag and took a cellphone and US$5 in cash.

Police reacted to the incident and succeeded in arresting Tatenda.

However, the other five suspected robbers escaped.

Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the arrest.

“We have arrested one of the robbers targeting commuters around Simon Mazorodze Flyover Road.

“We will leave no stone unturned to bring all suspects to justice,” said Insp. Chakanza. H-Metro
