Mnangagwa’s Daughter-in-Law Kelsea Tafirenyika Denied Bail as Court Cites Public Safety

HARARE — President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s daughter-in-law, Kelsea Tafirenyika, and her uncle, Issac Jassub, will remain in custody after a Harare regional magistrate dismissed their application for bail in a case involving alleged possession of foreign drugs.

Regional magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa reportedly ruled against the pair after the State argued that they posed a potential danger to society if released pending trial.

The court heard allegations that police recovered drugs from the two suspects which the State claims are foreign substances reportedly associated with use in Malawi.

In dismissing the bail bid, the magistrate stressed the need to protect the public from alleged drug peddling, with the court taking the view that releasing the accused persons could pose a risk to society.

Tafirenyika and Jassub will consequently remain on remand pending trial.

The case has attracted considerable public attention because of Tafirenyika’s connection to the First Family, placing renewed focus on Zimbabwe’s increasingly hard-line approach to cases involving alleged drug trafficking and possession.

However, the allegations against the two remain before the courts and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The latest development means the pair will have to remain in custody as they await the next stage of the criminal proceedings.
