‘ED Huchi’ Inmate Left Stranded After Chivayo Gift Breaks Down

HARARE — Bobby Makaza — the convicted rapist who popularised the “ED Huchi” chant — says the Toyota Aqua gifted to him by businessman Wicknell Chivayo has broken down due to poor maintenance. He added that the US$2,000 he received was spent on a woman he intended to marry, who later left him.

Makaza (video attached) says he now feels too embarrassed to ask Chivayo for further help.

In early 2024, Chivayo presented Makaza with the car and cash shortly after his release from prison. Makaza, 60, had been serving a 16-year sentence at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison following his April 2019 conviction for raping a nine-year-old girl in 2018. He was released in 2023 under a presidential amnesty that sparked outrage among rights defenders for freeing convicted rapists.

Upon his release, Makaza shouted from a bus window, “Mnangagwa huchi (is sweet),” a phrase that went viral and earned him the nickname “ED Huchi.”
