Oxfam Launches Simbiso Project To Alleviate Poverty For Smallholder Farmers in Harare with Support from SIDA

Harare – Oxfam today launched the Simbiso Project marking a significant step towards addressing poverty and promoting sustainable development in local communities. The initiative, supported by Swedish International Development Agency aimis to tackle key development challenges facing Zimbabweans, focusing on areas aligned with Oxfam’s broader mission of empowering communities and reducing poverty in communities.

Speaking at the launch event, Oxfam Zimbabwe programmes manager, Dr Leornard Unganai highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving sustainable development goals. “The Simbiso Project is a testament to our commitment to working with partners, civil society organisations and communities to alleviate poverty and hunger in Zimbabwe.” said Dr Unganai Oxfam Zimbabwe programmes manager . Oxfam’s work in Zimbabwe typically focuses on themes such as secure livelihoods, gender justice, and climate resilience.

Swedish International Development Agency support for the Simbiso Project underscores the country’s ongoing commitment to development cooperation with Zimbabwe.

“The support for the Simbiso Project aligns with Sweden’s broader development goals in Zimbabwe, focusing on sustainable and equitable development that benefits the most vulnerable populations,” said a representative from Sida.

Oxfam has been active in Zimbabwe, implementing various initiatives aimed at enhancing food security, promoting gender equality, and supporting climate change adaptation efforts. The USD5 Million Simbiso Project is expected to cover four districts .These districts are Mberengwa , Bulilima, Buhera and Gutu which will run for three years.

The programme will bring together stakeholders from government agencies, local organizations , universities , Meteorological and international partners, highlighting the collaborative nature of the initiative.
