What caused the fatal Limpopo crash of a Delta bus heading to Zimbabwe

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has corrected earlier reports about the fatal Christmas Day crash involving a passenger bus travelling to Zimbabwe, saying the probable cause of the accident was reckless and negligent driving.

In a clarification issued on Thursday, the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety said the collision occurred at about 8.30 am on 25 December on the N1-29 near Musekene, between Masekwa Bricks and Masekena Garage in the Vhembe district.

According to the department, the crash happened when the driver of an Isuzu heavy motor vehicle overtook on a barrier line and collided head-on with an oncoming Delta passenger bus.

Both male drivers — from the bus and the Isuzu heavy motor vehicle — were killed on impact. Two passengers travelling in the bus sustained serious injuries, while four others were left critically injured.

Earlier reports described the collision as involving a bus and a light motor vehicle, and had not clearly stated the circumstances that led to the crash.

Emergency medical services, including district EMS management and paramedic teams from Polokwane and surrounding areas, were dispatched to the scene. Fire services assisted with scene management, while trapped patients were extricated from the wreckage and transported to the hospital for further medical treatment.

The N1 was closed in both directions for several hours to allow for rescue operations, crash investigations and the clearing of debris, resulting in significant traffic delays. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes or delay travel.

The department said investigations into the crash are continuing, but confirmed that reckless and negligent driving was the probable cause of the fatal collision.
