Artisanal miners blamed for spike in child marriages, exploitation in Chinhoyi
A SPIKE in the prevalence of child marriages attributed to an influx of artisanal miners has jerked the community of Chinhoyi, Mashonaland West province, into action to nip the vice.
Known for its gold deposits, Chinhoyi urban and its peripheries has lately attracted migratory artisanal miners, popularly known as makorokoza, who have been accused of preying on young girls and co-habiting with them. Some have impregnated minors.
In light of the latest development, Councillor Arnold Muronga of Chinhoyi Ward 7, which incorporates Cherima and Gunhill suburbs, has called on residents of the area to join the fight against child marriages, which rob girls of their future after dropping out of school.
“As your elected Councillor, it is my duty to ensure the safety and well-being of all community members, particularly our children. Unfortunately, we have noticed a concerning trend of early marriages and exploitation of young girls by artisanal miners known as makorokoza. This is a serious issue that requires immediate attention and action,” said Muronga in a passionate appeal to residents.
“Let me be clear: I will not tolerate any form of exploitation or abuse of our children. Those found engaging in such activities will face the full force of the law. I will work closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice without fear or favour.
“If you have any information about early marriage or statutory rape activities in our ward, I urge you to come forward and report it to my office. Your confidentiality will be respected, and your contribution will be invaluable in our efforts to protect our children.”
He added that the Constitution of Zimbabwe, specifically Section 81 (1), guarantees the right of children to protection from economic and sexual exploitation, including child marriage.
“Furthermore, the Marriage Act [Chapter 5:11] sets the minimum age for marriage at 18 years, while the Sexual Offences Act [Chapter 9:21] criminalizes sexual relations with minors, including statutory rape.
“I call upon all constituents to join me in this fight against early marriage and exploitation. Let us work together to create a safe and nurturing environment for our children to grow and thrive,” Muronga said.
