By Desire Tshuma
A 23-year-old soldier, Macmillan Wurayayi, based at Pomona Barracks, was allegedly caught breaking into residents’ houses in Hatcliffe last night. Residents took matters into their own hands and arrested Wurayayi, suspecting him of being involved in illicit activities.
National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, acknowledged Wurayayi’s arrest, stating that police are still investigating the issue. He condemned the involvement of security personnel in criminal activities, especially armed robbery cases. “The involvement of security personnel in such activities is a cause for concern,” Nyathi said ¹.
This incident comes after three armed soldiers were arrested in December 2024 for a spree of armed robbery cases in Fortrixon, highlighting the growing concern about security personnel’s involvement in crime.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been vocal about tackling drug abuse in Zimbabwe, emphasizing the need to combat the drug menace and rehabilitate victims.
A soldier under the influence of dangerous drugs poses a significant threat to society, compromising national security and putting innocent lives at risk.
