Driver Sentenced To 14 Months, Licence Cancelled Over Crash That Claimed Two Lives
The Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court has convicted a 34-year-old driver of culpable homicide after he was involved in a crash that killed two people.
The court heard that on 3 August 2025, at around 4:30 pm, along the Masvingo–Mbalabala Road at the 124 km peg, Piniel Ngwarai was driving a 15-tonne Volvo truck. A commuter minibus in front stopped to make a right turn.
Ngwarai, driving too fast and too close to the minibus, braked suddenly, lost control, and swerved into the oncoming lane.
His truck hit a Toyota Town Ace and ended up on top of it. Two people in the smaller vehicle were trapped and died at the scene.
The court found Ngwarai negligent for speeding, failing to keep a proper lookout, and following too closely.
He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, with four months suspended, meaning he will serve 14 months.
The court also banned Ngwarai from driving for 12 months and cancelled his driver’s licence.
