High Court Rejects Mpofu, Chimombe Appeal Bid

The High Court has rejected an application by jailed businessmen Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe to appeal their convictions and sentences at the Supreme Court, saying its decision was correct.

In a ruling released on Monday evening, Justice Pisirayi Kwenda said the trial court followed the proper sentencing guidelines.

He added that if there was any mistake, it was in favour of the accused, and noted that the State accepted the sentences. Justice Kwenda ruled:

“The applications for leave to appeal are dismissed in both applications.”

Mpofu and Chimombe are serving sentences of 17 years and 12 years, respectively, after being convicted of defrauding the government of more than US$7 million under the Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme. –
