President Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba warns those planning protests over the recent constitutional amendments to extend presidential term limits
George Charamba, spokesperson for Emmerson Mnangagwa, has warned opposition politicians against mobilising street protests over the Cabinet-approved Constitutional Amendment Bill, saying any attempts to incite instability will be met decisively.
The warning comes in response to calls by opposition figures for citizens to protest against amendments that would extend presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years, suspend the 2028 elections, and allow the president to be elected by Parliament.
Opposition leader Jacob Ngarivhume said his party would fight the changes through the courts, Parliament, and public demonstrations.
“We are launching strategic litigation in the courts in response to the Cabinet approval. We are fighting in Parliament to ensure that we raise one-third to stop this Bill. And most importantly, we are calling on Zimbabweans to get into the streets to exercise our constitutional rights to protest against these illegal constitutional changes,” Ngarivhume said.
In reply, Charamba issued a stern warning: “Ndizvo zviripo mufunge (that is how things stand) any whiff of fomenting instability will be met decisively! Changu kukuyambira maererano nemamiriro ekunze (I am warning you about the prevailing conditions),” he wrote.
