SAPS deploy K-9 unit, divers to search for missing firearm as Mugabe’s son Chatunga faces attempted murder charges

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), including divers and the K-9 unit, returned to Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe’s Hyde Park residence in Johannesburg as the search continues for the firearm allegedly used in the shooting of an employee.

The weapon has not yet been recovered.

Bellarmine Chatunga was arrested following allegations that he shot a 23-year-old gardener after a dispute at the property. The victim, who sustained two gunshot wounds, remains in critical condition. His identity has not been disclosed.

When police were first called to the scene on Thursday, Chatunga (28) was reportedly uncooperative and locked himself inside the house for nearly two hours.

He was initially taken in for questioning and later charged with attempted murder alongside a 33-year-old accomplice.

“The police can confirm that the two men that were brought in for questioning in relation to a shooting that occurred earlier today at Hyde Park have been officially arrested and are expected to appear before the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court soon on charges of attempted murder. Police investigations continue,” Gauteng Provincial Police Spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said.

Police confirmed that only a cartridge has been recovered so far, while the firearm allegedly used in the shooting remains missing.

Divers were deployed to search the swimming pool at the residence, which police described as unmaintained and dirty, in case the weapon had been discarded there. Meanwhile, other members of the multidisciplinary team continued to scour the property.

Authorities also seized a vehicle found at the residence after establishing that it was fitted with sirens authorised exclusively for use by SAPS.

Investigations into the shooting remain ongoing.
