ZPCS probes prisoner’s death at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison

THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has confirmed the recent passing on of an inmate at Chikurubi Farm Prison allaying suspicion that the deceased was victimised by wardens.

Gift Mbowa, who was serving a 12-month sentence, was found unresponsive in his cell around 3am on March 20, 2026, after complaining of chest pains, ZPCS said.

An independent investigation is reportedly underway to establish circumstances surrounding Mbowa’s sudden death.

In a statement following reports circulating on social media alleging that Mbowa’s demise may have resulted from an assault, ZPCS appealed for caution amid an ongoing probe.

β€œThe ZPCS acknowledges with concern reports circulating on social media alleging that the death may have been linked to assault. We take such allegations with the utmost seriousness,” said the prison authorities.

β€œIn line with our commitment to accountability, transparency and the protection of all persons in our custody, a full and independent investigation into circumstances surrounding the incident has been instituted.”

The ZPCS maintained that any conduct found to be inconsistent with human rights and professional standards will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

ZPCS extended its condolences to Mbowa’s family which has since been advised of his death.
