9,488 DEPORTED FROM SOUTH AFRICA, 7,000 STILL WAITING PROCESSING IN DURBAN

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has deported 9,488 foreign nationals from the Durban Drive-In site, in KwaZulu Natal, Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber confirmed Wednesday.

Schreiber said the operation was carried out “in an orderly, lawful and humane manner”. Verification and repatriation are ongoing at the site.

But thousands remain. An estimated 7,000 people are still at the Durban Drive-In, with new arrivals continuing even as processing continues.

The minister said all Malawian nationals stranded at Newlands, Johannesburg have now been repatriated after Home Affairs intervened.

In Pietermaritzburg, 657 people were removed from a site authorities described as having “inhumane conditions”. Operations there will continue through the night.

Schreiber said Home Affairs and the Inter-Ministerial Committee are working with all spheres of government to manage migration lawfully while protecting human dignity. He warned that no person may engage in violence or incitement.

Verification, repatriation and deportation operations will continue at affected sites until the remaining caseload is cleared.
