“I’M 80, I CAN’T KEEP FIGHTING FOR THE YOUTHS FOREVER—LET ME ENJOY MY LIFE,” MAPFUMO HITS BACK AT CRITICS

Zimbabwean music icon Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo has hit back at critics accusing him of “selling out” after accepting businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s reported million-dollar gift.

Speaking in an interview with Nehanda Radio, the 80-year-old Chimurenga legend questioned why many Zimbabweans expect him to continue carrying the burden of political resistance while younger generations remain largely silent.

Mapfumo said he has spent decades speaking out against injustice and continues to do so even at his advanced age. He argued that it is unfair for people who are unwilling to stand up themselves to expect an elderly musician to keep leading the fight.

Turning his attention to Zimbabwe’s youth, Mukanya challenged them to ask themselves what they are doing to change the situation they complain about instead of placing all their hopes on an 80-year-old artist.

His remarks come after a wave of criticism over his decision to accept Chivayo’s generous offer. Many social media users pointed out that Mapfumo had previously criticised Chivayo over corruption allegations and had mocked musicians such as Jah Prayzah for accepting luxury vehicles and other expensive gifts from the controversial businessman.

To his critics, the move appeared to contradict the principles he has long championed.

However, Mapfumo dismissed those accusations, insisting that Chivayo’s gesture should be viewed as appreciation from a loyal fan who values Chimurenga music rather than as a political endorsement.

The debate has since divided Zimbabweans, with some defending Mukanya’s right to enjoy the rewards of his lifelong contribution to music, while others argue that accepting gifts from politically connected figures undermines the message he has promoted for decades.
