Opposition leader Mundubile claims victory as Zambia suspends election results
Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile has claimed victory in the country’s general elections, including the crucial presidential contest, directly challenging President Hakainde Hichilema’s position as uncertainty grows over the electoral process.
Mundubile, the Tonse Alliance presidential candidate and leader of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity, said data compiled by his campaign through a Parallel Voter Tabulation (PVT) indicated that the opposition had secured victory.
His declaration came after the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) suspended the official counting of votes and the announcement of results, citing incidents of post-election violence.
Mundubile has also alleged that the situation has taken a more serious turn, claiming that his camp had received reports of possible military interference in the electoral process. The allegation has not been independently verified.
