Marere FC produced a sterling performance to boost their fight against relegation after defeating a disjointed Chegutu Pirates 2-1 at Pfupajena Stadium on Saturday.

Marere, under the interim guidance of captain Ruben Machaya following the unceremonious departure of coach Justice Chasura Mugota, scored on either side of the interval to worsen Pirates’ woes.

Striker Allen Shiri opened the scoring with a brilliant finish, placing the ball beyond the reach of Pirates goalkeeper Mandlenkhosi Hove.

After the break, Godfrey Chipapata capitalised on slack marking to double Marere’s advantage and put the visitors firmly in control.

Pirates managed to pull one goal back through veteran striker Raphael Manuvire, but Marere held on to secure a valuable victory.

Although delighted with the result, Machaya admitted that the match had been a challenging assignment, particularly given the circumstances surrounding the team’s coaching situation.

“Being a senior player and entrusted with the responsibility of leading the team, it was not easy for us,”

“Our initial motive was just to settle for a draw, but we later realised that we had chances of winning.”

“I’m really excited with the effort the boys displayed from the onset until the final whistle,” said Machaya.
