Castle Premier Soccer League newbies MWOS FC secured a slender 1-0 victory over ZPC Kariba, positioning themselves at the top of the league table as they await Ngezi’s match against Caps United on Sunday
After a goalless first half filled with missed opportunities at Baobab Stadium on Saturday in Mhondoro Ngezi, Billy Veremu scored the decisive goal with a header, complimenting an assist by Nigel Matiya midway through the second half, allowing Mwos to remain unbeaten.
Mwos made their intentions clear with an exciting brand of football. Veremu almost opened the scoring early on, but his powerful free kick from outside the box struck the upright post in the 29th minute.
In the closing moments of the match, Veremu had another chance to increase the lead when he was unmarked but failed to direct a deflection from ZPC Kariba defender Munashe Kamwendo.
ZPC Kariba also had their chances to level the score but were let down by their ineptitude to finish.
Veteran striker Moses Demera was particularly frustrated when his shot hit the upright just before halftime.
Kariba’s mediocrity facing goalmouth disappointed their coach, Newten Chitewe.
“I’m not happy with our finishing because we are failing to score, but we will work on improving where we are lacking,” Chitewe said.
While the electricity transmission team’s manager wore a sullen expression, Mwos FC’s coach, Lloyd Mutasa, applauded his players for their resilience but cautioned against complacency.
“I would like to first commend the boys for creating numerous chances in all the games we have played, even though our conversion rate has not been proportional,” stated Mutasa
“Secondly, it’s still early in the race and the boys must not brag. They know the team’s vision is to remain in the league, and everyone needs to stay humble and keep working hard.”
Out of the 5 games played so far, Mows have posted 3 wins, and 2 draws garnering 11 points
