Unprecedented Security Lockdown for Wicknell Chivayo Funeral: Procession Sparks Public Debate Across Harare
Key transport corridors across central Harare ground to total standstill today as heavy police forces implemented extensive road blockades to clear a path for the funeral cortege of controversial business tycoon Wicknell Chivayo—a security deployment
that local observers and motorists noted has never been accorded to
any national hero in the country’s history.
The massive security operation saw static police details block off
primary arteries including Union Avenue and Emmerson Dambudzo
Mnangagwa Road, while turning back traffic along major intersections
connected to Simon Vengai Muzenda Street and Samora Machel Avenue.
Pedestrian crowd control barricades held back hundreds of onlookers,
forcing thousands of morning commuters into massive feeder-road
gridlock.
The heavy perimeter lockdown was deployed to facilitate the movement
of the hearse fleet transporting the remains of Chivayo and his wife,
Lucy “Lulu” Muteke. The couple perished alongside four others in a
helicopter crash at Kudenga Farm in Marondera. Due to the severe
nature of the impact and subsequent fire, forensic teams completed DNA
matching prior to the procession. Church services were led by Johane
Masowe eChishanu apostolic clergy, with burial scheduled at Glen
Forest Cemetery.
However, the core focus of public reaction across the capital centered
on the unprecedented scale of the police force itself. Under standard
state protocol, official burials at the National Heroes Acre—even
those for high-ranking military commanders, cabinet ministers, or
prominent liberation figures—have **never** received a full,
hard-barrier municipal lockdown.
Historically, national hero interments rely strictly on brief, rolling
blue-light police escorts along Samora Machel Avenue and Rotten Row.
These standard state escorts allow general commercial and commuter
traffic on major surrounding corridors, such as Emmerson Dambudzo
Mnangagwa Road, to continue flowing almost immediately after the lead
convoy moves through.
By contrast, today’s operation saw police close down entire commercial
zones hours in advance, deploying static posts, heavy blockades, and
high-powered security escorts for a private funeral transit. The
decision to mobilize state police resources on a level never before
witnessed for any national hero buried at the national shrine has
raised sharp questions over state resource deployment and protocol for
private figures.
