UK-based Zimbabwean bus driver wins award for delivering baby
Zimbabwean Pummy Hadebe has won a major United Kingdom transport award after helping deliver a baby on her bus in Glasgow, Scotland.
Pummy was driving a Service 23 bus operated by McGill’s Buses on November 29, 2025, when a pregnant passenger went into labour while travelling to the hospital with her partner.
Realising the baby was about to arrive, Pummy stopped to help, contacted emergency services and assisted with the delivery before paramedics arrived.
She then placed the newborn on the mother’s tummy and used a towel from her own bag to keep the baby warm.
Both the mother and baby were later taken to hospital and confirmed to be in good health.
On October 1, 2026, Pummy was named Frontline Employee/Community Champion of the year at the United Kingdom National Transport Awards in London.
