Zimbabwe records 1584 malaria cases and two deaths

HARARE — Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) reported 1,584 malaria cases and two fatalities within a week, with children under five comprising 152 of the cases, according to the latest Disease Surveillance Report.

The report, ending 15 May 2024, noted that one death occurred in Mt Darwin District of Mashonaland Central Province and another in Masvingo District of Masvingo Province.

Mashonaland Central Province recorded the highest number of cases at 784, followed by Mashonaland West Province with 347.

The year’s cumulative malaria statistics stand at 24,432 cases and 47 deaths.

Concurrently, an outbreak of common diarrhea was documented with 6,386 cases and one fatality, the latter at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo Province.

Of these cases, 2,936 affected children under five. The Midlands Province reported 869 cases, while Mashonaland East Province reported 844.

The cumulative figures for common diarrhea have reached 120,006 cases and 41 deaths.

The MoHCC called for public vigilance, emphasizing the use of insecticide-treated bed nets, immediate medical care for fever and diarrhea symptoms, and maintaining hygiene standards to curb the spread of both diseases.
