The National Building Society (NBS) Friday launched its Glaudina flats projects in Harare.
Speaking at the official ground breaking ceremony, NBS managing director Sifiso Mahlangu said the Glaudina flats which comprise nine blocks will ease housing challenges for many in Harare.
“Today we are breaking ground here at Glaudina medium density for the construction of two blocks of flats out of nine blocks. Upon completion we shall go ahead and finish the remaining seven, and we have already managed to raise funds for the remainder through our internal sources, pre-sales and through IPEC,” said Mahlangu.
He said NBS has opened advance payments and pre-purchase arrangements for individuals and corporates while the NBS does the construction.
“As one of the leading building societies, NBS ensure everyone gets a roof over their heads at affordable prices as we fulfill the 2030 vision of the President Dr Mnangagwa,” said the NBS boss.
The NBS does not only cater for the formally employed but also caters for informally employed who have ability to pay rent. Informally employed people who need homes are also invited on board to make arrangements with NBS so that they get houses through prescribed arrangements.
Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare July Moyo (pictured), who was the guest of honour, said the government has encouraged building society organizations to go back to their basics of building houses for the people, provide mortgages, transactions, savings, treasury, provision of group schemes and Bancassurance.
“I have no doubt that civil servants can afford to pay for housing given that they are getting much higher salaries than their private sector counterparts. Even the private sector organisationscan also afford considering the turnover their companies make which determine their salaries,” said Moyo.
The Minister also spoke about the provision of food aid to the nation and said no-one will starve of hunger in Zimbabwe as the government has put in place measures to mitigate starvation.
“Cash for food arrangements have been made for people living in urban areas. We have done our research for vulnerable urban people and 1,7 million people will benefit from the cash for food programme.
“We have done our selection process which includes all persons with disabilities, child-headed families and those who are not working who shall benefit from this scheme which shall be paid out in our local ZiG currency,” said Moyo.
