Firewood vendors from Kadoma’s neighbouring villages feel the heat, scotch carts impounded for illegal trading

Fifteen scotch cart firewood vendors from nearby villages were arrested early this morning for illegally trading in Kadoma township.
The vendors, who hailed from surrounding rural areas, had been operating without permits and ignoring warnings from authorities.
Acting on tips from residents, Forestry Commission officers conducted a surprise operation, impounding the scotch carts and seizing the firewood.
The vendors were taken to Rimuka Police Station and charged with illegal trading and environmental violations.
The town’s mayor Councillor Nigel Ruzario commended the operation, stating that it was a major step in maintaining the town’s cleanliness and order.
The vendors, however, claimed they were unaware of the regulations and were only trying to make a living. The incident has sparked a debate on the need for clear guidelines and support for informal traders in the area.
Mr Simon Mapfumo who was among those arrested said last year’s poor harvest is forcing them into firewood trading.
