Government Deploys Soldiers in Residential Areas to Maintain Order Ahead of SADC Summit
The government has stationed soldiers in residential areas to ensure peace and order before the 44th SADC Heads of State and Government Summit, NewsDay reports. Police announced plans to deploy law enforcement agents to certain suburbs to enhance public security visibility.
This move coincides with heightened security measures in urban areas ahead of the summit, which Harare will host on August 17. Chitungwiza experienced a significant police and military presence yesterday, surprising residents. Soldiers and police patrolled in convoys, with soldiers in motorized military gear and police equipped with water cannons, batons, and guns.
Sources informed NewsDay that the atmosphere in the town was tense, with residents imposing self-curfews. Many bars closed early, and vendors were forced to leave their stalls. A resident at St Mary’s shopping center noted the limited loitering in the area.
