Zimbabwe’s heavyweight boxing champion Anesu Motsi’s dreams to revive the sport and also participate in local and international bouts have been boosted by the timely intervention of a sponsorship pledge from Minister of Youth Tino Machakaire.

Machakaire last Saturday pledged to support Motsi while addressing the Manicaland Youth League provincial Inter- district meeting in Makoni – Rusape.

Motsi (33) is battling to dominate the heavyweight category whose most dominant force was Proud ‘Kilimanjaro’ Chinembiri, who died in 1994.

He said the sponsorship would help him revive the boxing category that he has dominated in recent years albeit without any major regional and international bouts to cement his claim to being worthy of comparison to Kilimanjaro.

“After the death of Proud Kilimanjaro Chinembiri in 1994, most people thought that heavyweight championship has also come to an end,” Motsi said.

“I can revive heavyweight boxing in the country if l get more sponsors to enqble me to participate in local and international boxing bouts.”

Machakaire said he would  also inform President Mnangagwa about Motsi when he makes his donation later this month.

“I have heard your plea and l will definitely fullfil it on August 24 at Magamba training centre

Currently Motsi has 16 local medals and one from Mandela Cup in South Africa.
