In his post, Mavavarirwa warned consumers, urging them to make a life-or-death decision: either continue consuming these popular brands or switch to other roller meals.
Mavavarirwa claims that the mealie meal brands were found to contain glyphosate, a chemical linked to cancer.
“Zimbabweans, A MOMENT TO Choose LIFE OR DEATH!! These 3 Zim mealie meal were found to be containing Glysophate which causes Cancer. Our country has the highest Cancer Rates in Africa among other health issues like: Infertility, Liver & Kidney Disease, Anemia etc…Please share!!,” the message from Mavavarirwa read.
Public Demands Answers
This post sent shockwaves through the public, sparking widespread concern and a flood of questions aimed at government officials and National Foods, the company behind two of the three mealie meal brands. Consumers demanded clarity on the safety of the products, but at the time of writing, neither the government nor National Foods had responded to the allegations.
Farai Maguwu asked,
“What is the position of the GoZ on these claims? @dhonzamusoro007 @nickmangwana What is the Consumer Council of Zim saying @CCZ_263 and the brand owner National Foods @NAT_FOODS Further, will @PoliceZimbabwe act on this”
Criticism and Calls for Evidence
Despite the uproar, some social media users remained sceptical of the claims. They pointed out that @kvamavavarirwa has a history of promoting brands that compete directly with Red Seal, Pearlenta, and Ngwerewere, casting doubt on his motives.
Many users voiced concerns over the lack of concrete evidence backing the cancer claims. Some emphasized that Mavavarirwa’s allegations could be financially motivated.
@Charmieku:
The guy should stop marketing National Foods direct competitor for his issue to be taken seriously.. you cant claim something as serious and market for another miller in the same story…His case should start with GMB and Min of Agriculture which is the main supplier of grain
