Govt distributing 5 tonnes of food per ward to combat drought

In response to one of the most severe droughts in recent history, the Zimbabwean government has so far distributed 5 tonnes of food per ward to ensure no citizen faces starvation.

This initiative is running under the Zunde RaMambo/Isiphala SeNkosi Programme, which is being superintended by traditional leaders in vulnerable rural communities grappling with the effects of the El Niño-induced drought.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was handing over new Isuzu vehicles to Chiefs on Wednesday in Harare said, “As you are aware, the nation is currently going through one of the worst droughts ever experienced in our recent history, due to the vagaries of climate change. Be that as it may, my government has already put in place measures to ensure that no one starves.

“My government shall remain steadfast in distributing food to ensure that no one starves and chiefs play a pivotal role in food distribution through the Zunde RaMambo/Isiphala SeNkosi Programme.

“To date, five tonnes of food have been distributed per ward countrywide, with chiefs spearheading the distribution of the grain through the Programme”.

The government is also drilling boreholes to enhance water access in all 35 000 villages nationwide.
