A spirited Chegutu Pirates delivered an impressive second-half performance to secure vital points in their fight against relegation by winning 2-1 over Ngezi Platinum Stars at Baobab Stadium on Saturday
After trailing to Moses Demera’s first-half goal, Pirates restored parity through Tinotenda Ditima before pacy winger Tinashe Mavhudzi’s swift cross deflected off Richard Hachiro’s head to give visiting Pirates a deserving victory
Pirates announced their intentions early, but their inefficient scoring denied them an early lead as Reginalt Ngazima, Raphael Manuvire, and Wayne Kamurai failed to convert the chances they got
In the 22nd minute, Ngezi capitalized on their opportunity to exploit Pirates when Demera placed a cross from Tanaka Munemo into the far corner after his initial header was ruled offside.
Pirates returned from recess with more purpose, launching attacks led by Ngezi Developmental side outcasts Ditima and Mavhudzi, who disrespectfully enjoyed roasting and grilling Ngezi as they aimed to avoid relegation.
As Ngezi struggled to contain the visitors, they became emotional thereby committing brutal fouls against Pirates players.
Midway through the second half, Pirates coach Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe was sent off for protesting against the numerous unpunished crude challenges committed by Ngezi.
After the final whistle, Jongwe punched the air in celebration, pleased to secure a second consecutive win.
“I believe this is the first time this season that we have won consecutive matches.”
“We are proud of the boys for defeating the defending champions.”
“The boys are aware of the predicament we are in, and their performance has helped us remain the competition matrix ”
Jongwe was genuinely pleased with his team’s display.
“Great effort from the boys; we are still in the competitive mix.”
“Even though we conceded a goal, we created several chances, and our persistence paid off.”
While Jongwe was thrilled, his counterpart Takesure Chiragwi looked dejected and acknowledged Pirates’ excellent performance.
“Look at how they were playing; they did exceptionally well,” he said.
“Competing against a team that is fighting to avoid relegation is no easy task.
“Look, they are battling to ensure they survive or, at the very least, go down with respect,” Chiragwi added.
