From ashes to resilience: Mbare traders rebuild against all odds

The iconic Mbare Musika Market in Zimbabwe, once the vibrant heart of Harare’s trading scene, now stands in ruins after a devastating fire tore through its stalls earlier this month. This blaze left a trail of destruction, displacing an estimated 5,000 vendors and farmers who relied on the market for their daily income. Known for its bustling corridors and lively trading culture, Mbare Musika has been reduced to charred remains—a somber reminder of how quickly fortunes can change.

Yet, amidst the ashes, the resilience of Mbare’s vendors shines brightly. Even as they grapple with the trauma of lost stock, equipment, and income, traders have refused to surrender to despair. Within weeks of the disaster, makeshift stalls began appearing on the same burnt ground. These humble structures, crafted from salvaged materials, represent more than mere temporary stalls; they are symbols of determination, resilience, and the vendors’ collective hope to restore Mbare Musika to its former glory.

One of the affected vendors, 35-year-old mother of three Lucia Chinembiri, shared the toll the fire has taken on her. “I lost everything,” she said, recalling how her entire fresh produce business was reduced to ash. For many like Mrs. Chinembiri, the market was not just a source of income but a community and a way of life.

Now, the vendors face the challenge of rebuilding without adequate resources. They rely on community support, small donations, and their sheer will to overcome adversity. Although the road to recovery may be long, the spirit of Mbare Musika’s traders is unbroken, as they continue to rise from the ashes, determined to revive one of Zimbabwe’s historic markets.
