50 elephants to be slaughtered in Save Valley
…Meat to be distributed to villagers and ivory to be handed over to the State
A TOTAL of 50 elephants are set to be culled in the Save Valley Conservancy as part of plans to manage jumbo herds.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) said permits have been issued for an elephant management exercise in Save Valley Conservancy.
“The management quota is meant to address the growing elephant population in the region and we will initially target 50 elephants.
According to the 2024 aerial survey, there are 2 550 elephants against an ecological carrying capacity of 800 elephants in the Save Valley Conservancy,” said ZimParks spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo.
According to ZimParks, over the last five years, the Conservancy has translocated 200 elephants to Hurungwe and Sapi in an effort to manage the elephant population and protect the wildlife habitat.
“Elephant meat from the management exercise will be distributed to local communities while the ivory will be State property that will be handed over to ZimParks for safekeeping,”
