Chinhoyi Duo Nabbed for Stealing 40 Number Plates

Two men believed to be behind a brazen number plate theft syndicate in Chinhoyi have been arrested, with police still hunting down three other suspects.

Tawanda Alfred (38) and Alexander Muchandibaya (33), both from Chinhoyi, were nabbed after an investigation linked them to the theft of at least forty number plates—stolen mostly from parked cars at residential homes and car parks.

The case came to light after ZRP Chemagamba received a flood of reports from frustrated motorists whose number plates had mysteriously vanished.

Acting swiftly, police notified ZINARA and flagged the stolen plates, leading to multiple vehicle interceptions at toll gates.

The suspects are accused of fitting the stolen plates onto other vehicles, some of which had tampered chassis numbers and fake registration documents to match the stolen tags.

Mashonaland West Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, confirmed the arrests and revealed to H-Metro that the syndicate has so far confessed to stealing 21 number plates.

“Some of the vehicles had their chassis numbers and registration books altered to match the stolen number plates,” said Insp Kohwera.

The manhunt continues for the remaining trio still on the run.
