Masvingo ‘prophet’ jailed 20 years for rape
MASVINGO- Self-proclaimed Masvingo prophet, Masvingo prophet (45) Martin Dunga has been sentence to an effective 20 years in jail after being found guilty of two counts of rape.
Dunga who leads an apostolic sect was sentenced by Masvingo Regional Magistrate Innocent Bepura.
He was convicted of raping a minor aged 17 and a married woman aged 21.
The State led by Liberty Hove argued that the first rape happened in February 2024.
Circumstances are that sometime in February 2024, the minor was accompanying her mother who was ill to Gurajena Clinic.
They met a member of Dunga’s congregation who invited them to church. The two began congregants at the church.
Sometime in March last year, Dunga arranged for the minor to be a chorister at his church. He went on to attend a choir practice at met the minor at Munyave Bridge.
He briefly walked with her and raped her. The minor disclosed the matter to her father sometime in May 2024. On the second count, accused raped a married woman at his church in August 2025.
Circumstances are that Dunga welcomed a couple at his shrine and prayed for them. After a while, he invited the couple to another shrine some 50m from his congregation where he asked the husband to go to a nearby river and he raped the wife. The wife screamed and congregants could not hear her as they were singing. The wife tried to tell her husband about the rape and the husband didn’t pay attention to her until after a few days when they filed a Police report.
